George Millar is taking on this year’s Men’s 10K alongside his three cousins in support of Alzheimer’s Scotland, inspired by their gran and the impact dementia has had on their family. For George, the challenge is about far more than completing a running event. Running together as a group of four cousins makes the experience especially meaningful, giving them the chance to do something positive in honour of someone who has played such an important role in all of their lives.
Growing up, their gran was always at the heart of the family. From baking together in the kitchen to listening to her stories and enjoying time spent in her company, she created memories they will always carry with them. Seeing her live with Alzheimer’s has been incredibly difficult, and taking part in the Men’s 10K together felt like a powerful way for the cousins to respond as a family. Every mile they run is for her, and for the many other families affected by dementia across Scotland.
As part of his preparation for race day, George has been training regularly at Limitless Fitness Cumbernauld to build his strength and confidence ahead of the 10K. Supporting him along the way is his personal trainer, Jamie Gallagher, someone he has known for years through working shifts at Jamie’s McDonald’s store and through mutual friends. Having that existing friendship has made a real difference during training, with Jamie helping George improve both his fitness and his diet as he gets ready to take on the challenge.
Although he jokes that his younger cousins are a lot fitter than him and will likely find the distance easier, George is focused on achieving his own goal: reaching the finish line. Completing the Men’s 10K will be a proud moment for him and something he is determined to do for his gran. Taking part alongside his three cousins makes the challenge even more special, turning the event into a shared family effort that honours her while raising awareness and support for Alzheimer’s Scotland and the vital work they do for families living with dementia.
